Winter Break and Avatar

Journal Entry: Tue Dec 22, 2009, 10:57 AM

:boogie:

Yay!

I can't believe it! It's BREAK! As in... not working on homework EVERY DAY! I should sleep for a week. :D There's soooo much work to be done around the house that didn't get done when I was up to my eyebrows in textbooks and modeling. Hee. The spiffy thing is that I can probably take this last class's work, spiff it up some more, and make it into a portfolio piece! It does need quite a bit of work yet, though.

In the meantime, it's time to work on stuff for the store! And actually play a video game, organize my office area for the next quarter, clean up my files, reinstall every piece of software known to man, learn new modeling packages, write down some of the amazing game ideas I've had, and uh... sleep. Can't forget that last bit, very important.

I hope everyone has an amazing Christmas/winter holiday! So, what are your plans? :D

:shakefist: :sprint:

Sometimes, I obsess about things. It's not good, it's not healthy, but every once in a while an idea just gets stuck in my head and I can't seem to shake it loose! The funny thing is that if I write it down, it stops bothering me completely. So... I'm taking a minute to write down some of my crazy thoughts.

These are character dossiers for a rather well-known video game that (as I've been told) revolutionized the graphics in the gaming industry twelve years ago.

Villains:

Rufus -- A young man, the money-loving, power-hungry head of Shinra Corporation. It's his job to strip the materia from the land and he isn't about to let anyone, especially not some nonsensical tree-huggers, stand in his way. He is especially drawn to large deposits of this energy-storing mineral and always looking for ways to turn it to profit and power. The strong, military arm of the Corporation commands an army of soldiers that have had altercations with those protecting the planet in the past.

Sephiroth -- Once an elite soldier working for the Corporation, he goes crazy and turns into a power-mad homicidal maniac who tries to destroy the heroes at all costs. He tries to blow up the most highly concentrated source of the Lifestream on the planet. He has silver hair.

Heroes:

Cloud Strife -- The hero. He used to be a soldier working for the Corporation, one fraught with failure and hardship. After an accident that kills his best friend, which he barely escapes from, he becomes schizophrenic, taking on the role and personality of his best friend as a member of an elite fighting corps. It takes him time to find balance between the two roles and, when his mind finally heals, he becomes that which he pretended to be all along. He has short, spiky hair.

Tifa Lockheart -- The woman who loves Cloud and helps him find his way, healing the rift between the two worlds he stands between. Even after he betrays her time and again, she always returns to his side, ever faithful. She also is highly trained in martial arts, has fists like lightning, bears a sweet nature, and is utterly devoted to the cause of protecting the planet. She has long black hair.

Barret Wallace -- Hot-headed, he believes strongly that the planet needs to be defended and has no problem either expressing his views or fighting for them. He doesn't trust Cloud at first, and even speaks out against him time and again. After Cloud gains his trust, however, they become as closer than family. His overriding instinct is for aggressive defense, he has trouble sitting still when he feels action should be taken, and he has black hair.

Cid Highwind -- Cid is the ultimate "flyboy." He's walked that road and back again, there isn't a machine out there that Cid can't fly, and he flies them better than just about everyone out there. He used to work for the Corporation, but he can't sit still with all that's happening and leaves to join the rebel forces instead.

Red XIII/Nanaki -- Originally thought to be a mindless beast with a lion-like body and spiked crest, he is instead an intelligent native of the planet who fights to protect it.

Cait Sith -- Little is known about Cait Sith, but he is the eyes and ears on the inside of the Corporation that give them news and help them. He stays in the headquarters, interacting with them by means of a remotely controlled body.

Aeris Gainsborough -- The peace-loving woman, the flower girl who is attuned with the energies of the earth and the one who tries (in vain) to explain that the earth is a living thing and that the Corporation is killing it. Her instinct is to nurture and heal others, and she's got the intelligence and gift to do this, but she's got a soul made of steel. She loves children and has beautiful auburn curls.

Aeris is eventually killed by Sephiroth, but her attunement and love for the planet allow her to meld her life force with it, joining the Lifestream that flows all through the world. This is a turning point that causes grief for all, but it -needs- to happen for the forces of good to succeed. A prayer to the planet is made, that the planet protect itself from the unstoppable holocaust that comes, and it is only because of Aeris's memory and will that now runs through the Lifestream that the planet is able to hear and respond in a way that helps.

Ok. Got all this info firmly in mind? Now go watch Avatar.

Don't kill me!

Who could you be?

:meditation:

Avatar was awesome.

The effects weren't seamless, but they were darned near. Certainly the best I'd ever seen.

The story wasn't the most dramatic or enthralling I've ever heard, but it was a cut above the rest of the movie scene. In fact, it kept reminding me of a video game story more than a movie; where a movie would have ended, it took a breath and kept going, numerous times. Not a plot twist, but a deep breath, like a real person does when they find the resolve to keep fighting. Like the good stories do.

There was no sense of a cut-up screenplay or heavily edited book about it. It simply existed, completely, beginning to end, in a couple short hours. Sure, the end could be predicted. So could some of the joys and some of the losses. But, there were surprises that nested neatly into the storyline.

It wasn't a movie that made you think. At least, not long and hard like many "critically acclaimed" movies do. But, it made you think a little and feel a lot, like you were really there watching the events unfold. Maybe that was because we were watching it in 3D, maybe not. I guess you'll have to decide.

While watching it I kept coming back to similarities with Final Fantasy 7, how like this it would be if it were ever brushed up and made anew. A good game, not my favorite, but like enough it to say they shared a common mythos. Mom was reminded again and again of Little Fuzzy, a book so very like the heart of Avatar's story. I will say that anyone that loves war movies, love stories, or action, adventure, or role-playing video games needs to watch this movie. Any one of the bunch. Just so each and every one of you can decide how you like it yourselves.

It was left open for a sequel, series, even a whole franchise. But, I must say, it would be very difficult to make one that doesn't diminish the franchise as a whole. I keep finding myself saying, "I hope they manage to get back all of the money they spent on it" -- and meaning it.

Reliving Old Lessons

Journal Entry: Wed Dec 9, 2009, 12:17 PM

:threaten:

So, this is my week of tough lessons and tougher decisions.

First Lesson: Don't Save Your Art

It's a mistake to only save your skills for certain projects or special occasions. The things that I do on a daily basis, paint for the Daily Sketch Challenge, model in 3DS Max for school, are the things I do easiest now. By saving my 3D illustrations only for contests, I've been forgetting many valuable lessons I've learned over the years. This was illustrated quite starkly this week, when I went to work on my entry for the Dreams contest. For weeks I worked on modeling every piece from scratch, using my homework from GAD327:CharacterModeling to build the structure for my picture. But, the knowledge just wasn't there -- the more I tried to do, the less I got done.

So, with only a few days left before the deadline, I decided to build the scene using assets I already had. Days and nights, up past midnight, trying to build the scene as I envisioned it. And, given the amount of time I had left, I struggled. Pieces fell into place, I found everything I needed like magic, but I grew easily frustrated and had trouble bringing all of those elements together. Nothing seemed to work! It wasn't until I woke up this morning, after turning my picture in, that I remembered one of the most valuable lessons I'd learned over the years: "Plan ahead, and ever let yourself get frustrated by a scene that won't render. You can always break it up into multiple layers."

Saving my time by not working more on illustrations skunked me, in the end. I lost the time -- the processing power of my computer wasn't there, and I hadn't planned out enough time to assemble all of the scene elements effectively in time. Between crashing, options simply not working or not saving, and grinding slow-downs even with all extra options disabled, time evaporated like water on a windshield. Which brings us to hard lesson number two this week.

Second Lesson: Plan on Using What You Have

Never, ever, ever, plan on having a new computer arrive in time for a deadline. This goes especially with "too good to be true" offers, orders that coincide with key software release dates, and anything near the holidays.

My computer is dying. Heaven only knows why: I've cleaned it out, dusted off the fans, ran disk cleanup, defragged, scanned, reformatted, restored, reinstalled, and in general done everything that I can think of to freshen and speed it up. The result is that it is slowly getting worse. In order to get Photoshop to load my tablet drivers, or Poser to load without script errors, I have to have every single other program closed first. I have never crashed 3DSMax as often as I have the last few weeks. It used to be that I could and did multitask a minimum of three programs at once, plus a browser and text editor. It is as if all of the processing power is just... gone.

So, I recently ordered a new computer from Dell -- it was serendipity that I happened to be in the right place at the right time to get a fantastic deal. One I could actually afford to finance! It was due to be shipped four weeks out, and arrive in the same week that the current session started at school. I was -so happy-. When I received an email saying it was delayed a week, I was a little disappointed, but ok -- after all, I'd ordered it right about the time Win7 came out, so they probably got a lot of orders. I couldn't afford to cancel, anyway. I absolutely needed a reliable computer and couldn't find any other deals that came close.

After the third weekly delay, and having to pass the hurdle of electronically signing an agreement to agree to all delays, it looked like my order would finally be delivered. Another delay notification hadn't arrived on the day when it usually did and, although my Order Status was still listed as being "In Production," maybe it was still on time, right? At least I'd be getting it before Christmas! In two more days, my Order Status updated with an expected delivery of the end of the first week of January. For an order made in the third week of October. I ranted, fussed, fumed, sent two emails to Dell (only one of which got answered) and ended up speaking to a customer service rep on the phone that seemed very nice but sounded as if she could do very little.

In the end, it comes down to a series of mistakes: I happily planned on having a new, working computer for my character modeling class, planning projects ambitious enough that I'd need the new computer to handle them. I happily planned on having a computer fast enough that I'd be able to put together fantastic entries for all my favorite holiday contests. And, I happily planned on having a computer stable and reliable enough that I'd be able to work on homework -and- have a life outside school. Who knew it'd take a minimum of two and a half months to deliver a computer? If it even arrives working that is. If the problem truly is with supply then there's like as not problems occurring on the production line, too. All this adds up to one, bug, depressing disappointment.

So, to recap, our tips for this week are:
  1. Hone your art. Practice for yourself.

  2. What you have is what you've got. Use it as best you can.
